Adair is a town in Mayes County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 790 at the 2010 census, compared to 704 at the 2000 census. Named for two prominent Cherokee brothers, the town was established in 1883. It opened a Cherokee school.
Adair is named after two&nbsp;Cherokee&nbsp;brothers,&nbsp;William Penn Adair, a politician and jurist, and Dr. Walter Thompson Adair.&nbsp;It was established on March 15, 1883, and incorporated in 1897. William Penn Adair lived in the area off and on for 17 years beginning in the late 1860s. In the 1880s, a Cherokee school was started here. In 1907, shortly before statehood, the school began to admit white students. As of the 2010&nbsp;census, Adair had a population of 790.&nbsp;The&nbsp;population density&nbsp;was 180 people per square mile (68/km2). The town's 315 housing units were dispersed at an average density of 70 per square mile (27/km2). The racial and ethnic composition of the population was 72.4% white, 0.1% black or African American, 18.9% Native American, 0.6% reporting some other race and 8.0% reporting two or more races. 3.5% of the population was Hispanic or Latino. There were 272 households, out of which 36.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.7% were&nbsp;married couples&nbsp;living together, 12.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.8% were non-families. 23.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.06.

Adair

The town was named for a local landmark, a plank cabin, that existed near the place where the&nbsp;Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railway&nbsp;built a switch in 1871&ndash;2. The first post office in this part of Indian Territory opened in 1872. (though it was not named Big Cabin until 1892). Some entrepreneurs built a stockyard in the town in 1888. The first two-story frame building was constructed in 1892. In 1892 the Post Office Department assigned a postal designation to Big Cabin. A school for non-Indian children began in 1895. The railroad built a depot in 1903,[1]
Big Cabin was platted as a town in 1904. It began the process to incorporate in 1926, but did not finish the task until 1958. Meanwhile, the area around Big Cabin became noted for producing hay. A local resident claimed that the town had shipped out more hay between 1893 and 1910 than any other town in the U.S. He claimed that Big Cabin was "the Hay Capital of the World."

Big Cabin

Located south of Tulsa, Bixby is known for its competitive school system offering great academic and athletic opportunities. Bixby was impacted and enriched by the discovery of nearby natural gas deposits in 1905-1906 and oil fields in 1913, but farming remained the backbone of the community well into the 20th Century.&nbsp;Early farmers focused on production of&nbsp;cotton,&nbsp;wheat&nbsp;and&nbsp;alfalfa&nbsp;in the rich river bottom. During the 1930s, truck farming of&nbsp;vegetables&nbsp;slowly replaced those crops. In 1941, Bixby became an important regional center for shipping produce by railroads. It was at that time that Bixby was christened with its nickname "The Garden Spot of Oklahoma," a designation still carried on the town seal and public vehicles.&nbsp;Cantaloupes,&nbsp;potatoes,&nbsp;radishes,&nbsp;squash,&nbsp;turnips,&nbsp;spinach&nbsp;and&nbsp;sweet corn&nbsp;were shipped from Bixby all over the U.S. In time, the majority of the truck farms were converted to the production of&nbsp;sod, typically&nbsp;Bermuda grass, or developed for residential and other purposes. Only a small percentage of Bixby residents now work in&nbsp;agriculture, but the town continues to celebrate its earthy roots with the yearly "Green Corn Festival" in June.
As of the 2010 census, there were 20,884 people, 7,658 households, and 5,295 families residing in the city. The&nbsp;population density&nbsp;was 889.3 people per square mile (344/km2). There were 8,187 housing units at an average density of 319.8 per square mile (94.9/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 84.2%&nbsp;White, 1.6%&nbsp;African American, 5.9%&nbsp;Native American, 1.6%&nbsp;Asian, 0.01%&nbsp;Pacific Islander, 1.9% from&nbsp;other races, and 4.8% from two or more races.&nbsp;Hispanic&nbsp;or&nbsp;Latino of any race were 4.9% of the population.&nbsp;There were 7,658 households, out of which 30.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.4% were&nbsp;married couples&nbsp;living together, 8.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.6% were non-families. 19.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 7.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.72 and the average family size was 3.12.

Bixby

Broken Arrow

In 1881, Chelsea began as a stop on the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad. A post office was established in November 1882. The community incorporated as a town in the Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory, in 1889. The town was surveyed and platted in 1902. The Bank of Chelsea, the first state bank in Indian Territory, began operation in March 1896.
The town economy has historically rested on farming, ranching and oil production. Important farm products were oats, corn, wheat and pecans. A flour mill built circa 1892 was one of Chelsea's original industries. Chelsea became noted as a shipping point for cattle and hay before statehood in 1907. The Chelsea-Alluwe oil field was discovered southwest of Chelsea in 1889 by the United States Oil and Gas Company.
According to the American Oil &amp; Gas Historical Society, Edward Byrd, whose wife was a Cherokee woman, discovered oil seeps in 1882 southwest Chelsea, which was then part of the Cherokee Nation in Indian Territory. He apparently took no action to exploit his discovery until 1887, when he and William B. Linn, a Pennsylvanian, and a group of investors from Kansas organized the United States Oil and Gas Company (USOGC). The company subsequently leased drilling rights from the Cherokee Nation on 100,000 acres (400 km2) of land lying west of Chelsea between the St. Louis and San Francisco Railroad and the Verdigris River. USOGC completed its first well in 1890, on Spencer Creek. It was a rudimentary operation, compared to productive sites completed a few years later. The well began producing a half barrel of good-quality crude per day from a depth of only 36 feet (11 m). This was enough for USOGC enthusiasts to claim it was, "... the first oil well in Oklahoma."
Chelsea's claim to the first oil well proved to be untrue. Although USOGC drilled ten other wells on its lease in the next two years, the total production was said to be only 12 barrels, economically insignificant, after which the company ceased operating. The Cherokee Oil and Gas Company then took over the lease. By then, the Cherokee government had limited the size of each lease to 12,000 acres (49 km2). It and other companies later drilled more productive wells which proved economically viable. The whole area became known as the Chelsea-Alluwe Oil Field. Significant production dropped after 1916 and the oil companies stopped work in this field shortly after.

Chelsea 

Claremore is a city and the county seat of Rogers County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 18,581 at the 2010 census, a 17.1 percent increase from 15,873 at the 2000 census.

Jenks

The first community established at this site was named Metz, named for its first postmaster, Fred Metzner. The name was changed even before the railroad was built in 1889. Nowata served as a train stop for Native Americans from the East being resettled by the government. Some controversy exists about the meaning of the town name. The Lenape tribesmen who passed through named it "nuwita," meaning "friendly" or "welcome." In the Cherokee language, the town is called ??????? (A-ma-di-ka-ni-gunh-gunh, roughly), which means, "water is all gone," translating what it sounded like the word meant: No Water.
In 1889, the Kansas and Arkansas Valley Railway (later part of the Missouri Pacific Railway) built a line through Nowata. A post office was established in the town on November 8, 1889. Nowata was incorporated April 17, 1899. By 1900, Nowata had 498 residents.
Oil and gas were discovered nearby in 1904, stimulating the Nowata economy. The find established Nowata as "...a region (having) a reputation for being the world's largest shallow oil field." Some wells in this field have continued to produce into the twenty-first century.
A Federal court was established in 1904, and met on the third floor of the new building owned by the First National Bank of Nowata. The building housing the court burned down in 1909, destroying all records and forcing the court to move temporarily to another building. When Oklahoma became a state on November 16, 1907, Nowata County was created and named for the city, which was designated as the county seat. By that time, the city population had climbed to 2,233. A permanent Nowata County Courthouse was completed in 1912, and remains in use at present. It is the only local property listed on the National Record of Historic Places.
Nowata's peak population was 4,435 in 1920. The city became the southern terminus of the Union Electric Railway, which continued to serve the city until 1948. Newspapers included the Nowata Herald and the Nowata Advertiser. The town had 850 telephones by 1930. However, the 1930 census showed the first population decline in the city's history, to nearly the 1910 level.

Nowata

Historic Oologah is the birthplace of The Cherokee Kid, known as America's Favorite Cherokee Cowboy,&nbsp;Will Rogers.&nbsp;Oologah is 30 minutes northeast of Tulsa on Highway 169 in northwest Rogers County. Oologah emerged as an Indian Territory coal mining boom town. It soon became a shipping point for coal mined in the area because of its location on the Iron Mountain and Southern railroad line.
In 1906, when Oologah was still a town in Indian Territory, the Bank of Oolagah was built due to the need for a safe depository and other general financial operations. It was one of the first banks in northeastern Oklahoma. The only bank in the area for over twenty years, and it existed as a commercial building for approximately eighty years.
Will Rogers said he told folks he was from Claremore because no one but an Indian could pronounce Oologah. The town's name is a&nbsp;Cherokee&nbsp;word meaning "dark cloud." Oologah (pronounced oo'-la-gawh) was also spelled Oolagah prior to&nbsp;Oklahoma's statehood (1907) and still is at some historic buildings.
 On August 12, 1995, the 60th anniversary of Will Rogers' tragic death, his son, Jimmy Rogers, and actor Ben Johnson from&nbsp;Pawhuska, Oklahoma unveiled The Cherokee Kid, a monument sculptured by&nbsp;Sandra Van Zandt, in downtown Oologah that portrays Will pausing for a drink at the old town pump with his favorite quarterhorse, Comanche. The Indian Territory town centered around the pump, a source of water for the community as well as the teams of horses bringing goods and people to the train depot, which is where Will met his wife, Betty.
The Oologah Historical Society commissioned local sculptor Sandra Van Zandt and impressionist Gary Moeller for the life-size bronze sculpture of Will. The base of the monument is the volunteered works of engineer Mark Rouk and general contractor Charles Buchfink. The monument depicts a bronzed moment in time just before statehood, around 1904 to 1906. The community came forth with most of the contributions from it's private individuals and small area businesses.
The old pump, having been welded shut many years ago, was thought to need a new water line. However, after the new line was installed to the monument, volunteers found the pipe to the old artesian well, so the new line was shut off, and the well's original line now supplies water from the pump again.
Will was born November 4, 1879 on The Dog Iron Ranch in the&nbsp;Cherokee Nation. Located just northeast of Oologah, the ranch, open daily for visitors, is now a living history ranch with longhorn cattle, goats, sheep, geese and peacocks.
The Dog Iron Ranch&nbsp;predates the town, which grew up when the railroad came through around 1890. A stroll down the original brick sidewalks through Oologah will take you back almost 100 years. You can experience banking of Indian Territory days at the Bank of Oolagah. The bank was restored in 1985 and inspired a rebirth of historic downtown Oologah. Owasso

Pryor Creek or Pryor is a city in and county seat of Mayes County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 8,659 at the 2000 census, compared to 9,539 in the 2010 census.
Originally named Coo-Y-Yah, Cherokee for "place of the huckleberries", it was renamed Pryor Creek in 1887 which was the name of the local railroad station, which is turn was named for the nearby creek. Due to confusion in distinguishing handwritten mailing addresses to Pryor Creek and Pond Creek, the U.S. Postal Service name for the city was shortened to Pryor, and both names are in common usage.
Pryor is located in northeast Oklahoma at the intersection of US Route 69 and Oklahoma State Highway 20. The stream known as Pryor Creek flows past the west and south sides of the city.
According to the&nbsp;United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.5&nbsp;square miles (16.9&nbsp;km&sup2;), of which, 6.5&nbsp;square miles (16.8&nbsp;km&sup2;) of it is land and 0.04&nbsp;square miles (0.1&nbsp;km&sup2;) of it (0.31%) is water.

Pryor

Sapulpa is a city in Creek and Tulsa counties in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. The population was 20,544 at the 2010 United States census, compared to 19,166 at the 2000 census. As of 2013 the estimated population was 20,836.
